News that touched me / Day 11 / My Advent Calendar 2013

So, I don’t really read news. I used to be an avid news reader, but then I went to uni and studied media & communications and got so annoyed with all the issues I found in the news. So I stopped. I do read news occasionally. Mostly I end up on swedish news outlets. The weird part there isn’t that I check them because I think they’re more objective or more correct, no, being the design nerd I am, I prefer how their sites are structured.  I know, really doesn’t make any sense.

Anyhow, this means that I don’t stay as up to date on current events as I’d like, it also means that it’s harder for news stories to stick to my memory. Also, as you know, my memory is awful.

Oh, there’s one thing I heard about through a swedish podcast (this is apparently how I get news nowadays. I know, it’s appalling and I should change it) about Rana Plaza, which left me incredibly upset. I remember sitting on the shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel in Tokyo listening to it, and being too caught up in the podcast to care about the view of this city I had never visited before.

Tv shows I’ve been following / Day 10 / My Advent Calendar 2013

I’ve watched loads and loads of tv shows this year. Since I’ve spent quite a fair amount of time at home, they’ve been my company. To make it less awful for you to read through, I’ll give you a list of good ones I’ve seen this year:

  • The Following
  • The Killing (season 3)
  • Girls (always)
  • The Newsroom
  • Parks and Recreation <3
  • Solsidan (Swedish series)
  • Top of the Lake

Okay, I have better things to do now.

Best song / Day 9 / My Advent Calendar 2013

If you asked me a month ago, I’m sure I would have said something with Mø, like this one, or Pilgrim. That’s some great music right there.

But now the song of the year is the following. For me it’s probably less to do with the song itself (although it’s a great song, no doubt about that) and more to do with it being the song of choice for the video I made for an epic house party a while back. It encompasses this spring in so many ways, and makes me excited + calm + happy all in one.

Now listen.

This is how I tried to make society better / Day 8 / My Advent Calendar 2013

This should have been mentioned in the last post. This is something that’s important to me, but where I feel like I haven’t done enough. Far from it. I’ll get better next year.

This year we started giving money to selected help organisations again. We stopped when we left Sweden and didn’t support any organisations when in Ghana (for financial reasons. I earned a ghanaian salary so we were keeping some things a bit tight). That feels good at least.

We also started a cookie bank here in Melbourne. A cookie bank is the following: a group  of friends that meet up about once every month. Everyone brings $10. You eat cookies (that someone made) and invest that money in micro credits in developing countries. The money you get paid back is re-invested.

And as usual I’m involved in the small Swedish NGO Blichta. I want to do more with them, but am stuck with how. It’s so frustrating sometimes when I know that there’s this amazing little ngo, where everything goes to stuff that’s really needed. Sure, I have a head start in understanding since I know the nun running the place (she might be a nun but religion has nothing to do with the operations) as well as spent some time there helping out. I not just want to more, I need to. Just need to figure out how first.

What I hope for in 2014 / Day 7 / My Advent Calendar 2013

It’s been an intense weekend. It has been full speed ahead except a few hours this afternoon. I took a nap then. Well I couldn’t post anything either, my computer was at a friend’s place.

Anyhow. Enough of my excuse and onto what should have been posted yesterday.

1. Work
Going freelance was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m feeling less stressed and more happy than I have ever done in my life, and I think a lot of that’s due to the fact that I’m more in control over work. Only thing that I miss is a bit of stability, and this is what I hope for during 2014. Being able to keep the freedom and empowerment, but also get to some basic level of stability. Mmm… I love stability + routines.

2. Working out
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m not a fan of working out. I’ve had a few periods when I’ve done a fair amount of workout, but they’ve never lasted. Mainly because whenever I work out I just get tired + grumpy. Runners high? Never had. It all sucks.

I hope that 2014 brings with it a training form that’ll keep me fit and that I find fun doing. There must be something out there for me, I just need to find it. Also, I want a training partner.

3. Stay the same
This year has in many ways been my ideal year. There’s been traveling (within Australia to Tasmania, Sydney, around Melbs, Townsville and Brisbane + Japan + Sweden) and a lot of socialising. I’m kind of happy where I’m at. You know that some people sometimes say that when you’re on top you don’t really appreciate it, you only do that once everything has gone wrong? Well this isn’t the case. I’m on top and loving + appreciating every single second.

Best event / Day 6 / My Advent Calendar 2013

Why are all these posts so darn hard? Also, I’m not sure ‘event’ is the best translation of the swedish word in the list I found. It’s more like ‘occurrence’, but that doesn’t feel completely right either.

Anyway. We’re not here to talk about the words. We’re here to pinpoint my best event this year. I think I’ll pick my 30th birthday party.

I’m not picking it because it was such a great party (the greatest party of the year must surely have been Angela and Iulian’s house party, see video + photos here), it’s more for what came out of it. Because if it wasn’t for that party I would never have met Angela. And if that wouldn’t have happened, I wouldn’t have met Lani. Or Eric. Or Daisy. Or Juan. Or Jen. Etcetera. Or I’m sure I would have eventually, but that was the first domino in a social change that I have simply loved. These last few months have been filled with impromptu parties, charades, great food and really bad jokes, all of which have made me an immensely happy person.

Surprisingly enough I have no pictures from that party. Too bad though, I would have loved a video from our very first charade session, where I tried to do ‘circus freak’ (and fail miserably) or a snap from the werewolf game.

I remember it was the last warm night before winter. We sat out in the backyard until late, late, I was perfectly tipsy and the crowd was small, but sweet.

Childhood memory / Day 5 / My Advent Calendar 2013

syskon

Me (~5yo) and my brother (~7yo), in our bedroom in Addis Abeba.

I don’t remember much from my childhood. My memory in general is awful, which is why I started blogging back in 2000 in the first place. Surprisingly enough I remember things from when I was 4 to 6. When we lived in Ethiopia. It’s not so much one memory, but different images. Like that one at kindergarten when it had rained hard but now it was sunny and we were running around trying to avoid any damp concrete, walking somewhere in the countryside, by an orthodox church and then further away, through the dry grass and seeing crates filled with human skulls, playing with a barbie handbag with our day watchman Allemo, seeing the flour beetles scuttling around in the flour in the hallway cupboard, or the weird spider cocoon in the backyard shed or the purple flowers that grew on the wall to our neighbours.

There are so many flashbacks, so many memories. Sometimes I don’t know if they are my own or if I just pieced them together from photographs. One thing I do know though, is that when we went to Ethiopia a few years ago, I managed to find my way back to my childhood home from just my memory. No maps, no nothing, just my memory. It was both odd and exhilarating and even though no one was home, we sat outside for a while and I was in awe of my memory. That something that so often fails me could take me back to a place I haven’t been to in over 20 years. That’s something, alright.

Best meal / Day 4 / My Advent Calendar 2013

If yesterday was hard, today is impossible. I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed by a meal in Melbourne. Well, maybe once or twice, but in general the food is so good, wherever you go.

My standard homemade deliciousness meal has probably been the carrot soup with coconut milk. Oh no! Recently I’ve done loads and loads of simple quesadillas with egg in them and they are possibly the greatest thing ever. I have no picture of them, so for now you’ll have to live with this random picture of a breakfast tortilla thingy. I will share the recipe for my standard one next time I do it though.

Best meal out is even harder, so here are some random delicious meals and treats I’ve eaten. Sooo yummy, getting hungry now!

131119-Brissy-Day3-21

The most perfectly fried halloumi I’ve ever eaten I think. So incredibly good. At this tapas place in Noosa.

131119-Brissy-Day4-14

Last year was the year of the olive and this year was the year I started to appreciate it somewhat. Who knew I could crave it at times?

131120-Neapoli-4

The most fluffly amazing banana soufflé ever.

131123-GermanChristmasMarket-26

Injera. Always injera.

131123-SaturdayatNGV-3

Halloumi sandwich at Ponyfish Island. This one really did the trick that day. Simply amazing.

131128-RandomStuff-8

I have a soft spot for anything mushroomy. And mushroom paté with those onions? Ohmy.

Now I’m hungry. Need to go for breakfast. It will surely be amazing. Over and out.

Favourite photo / Day 3 / My Advent Calendar 2013

I’ve started taking more pictures since starting this blog. This one + Klaus and Fritz. A lot more. I’ve even gotten to the point that I feel that I’m fairly good at it. I’m not great, but quite ok. Also, it’s so much fun. Picking one specific image is therefore incredibly hard. This one is indeed recent, but I couldn’t not pick it. I love it.

Best workout event / Day 2 / My Advent Calendar 2013

I hate working out. I really do. People talk about getting energetic or getting runner’s high after they work out and all I get is grumpy and tired. For a few months I tried to become a runner and forced myself out three times a week. It went ok. Except one training session, I hated them all. Sincerely. Now I have a bike and bike everywhere. I prefer getting workouts while going somewhere, like biking or hiking, rather then doing it for the sake of the workout.

Anyway. I did participate in a run this year. Although calling it a run might be over exaggerating. We did run short bursts, but mostly we simply sat down and covered ourselves in paint, stopped for photos or simply walked and chatted. Overall, it was the best kind of sports event there is.

131125-ColourRun-62

I posted about this a day after the event as well.
